Brief History: Discovered by Arabs in AD975 and again by Portugese in 1505, was subsequently under the rule of the Dutch, French and British before gaining independence in 1968
Currency: Mauritian Rupee
Passports & Visas: British and Irish passport holders do not require a visa, just a passport valid for 6 months from arrival and a return or onward travel ticket.
Language: Official language is English and is widely spoken in tourist areas. Otherwise French, Creole, Hindi and Urdu is spoken.
Vaccinations: Mauritius is fairly unique for a tropical country in that it is free of such diseases as malaria, yellow fever and cholera. However please check with your doctor to be up-to-date and sure.
Water: Is clean and Mauritians drink it. Fine for brushing your teeth but we suggest that you use bottled water for drinking.
